• It should come as no surprise to anyone that Dr. Marc Bekoff’s new book with co-author Dr. Jessica Pierce contains fascinating and essential information for everyone interested in dogs, much less those of us who share our homes with them.
  The opening chapter is both startling, even shocking, as the authors label our beloved dogs our “captives.” Most of us have probably not considered this idea before, but after the explanation its truth becomes apparent. Our relationship with dogs is undeniably “asymmetrical.” As a result, they enjoy only the experiences, the environments, the friends, the food, the freedoms that we allow them. While stressing there is no “universal dog,” the authors educate us on the dog’s five senses so we can better understand a dog’s point of view of the world and therefore improve the lives of our “captives.”
  Seamlessly linked to the exploration of their senses is advice on how this knowledge can enable us to increase the agency of our dogs. The authors include anecdotes about both their dogs and those of others, as well as the most current research confirming that dogs experience a wide range of emotions, that they are keen readers of human faces, and that they are unique in their individual preferences.
  There are common experiences we are encouraged to provide to help us in “unleashing our dogs”—literally if possible. We must realize walks are for them, dog park visits can be valuable, and free access to fenced yards helps ameliorate their captivity. If our communities allow them to be literally unleashed, all the better.
  This excellent book achieves the nearly impossible—it is readable and accessible to a non-academic audience while also thoroughly documented as one would expect from two eminent academics. This is a book to keep close at hand; both human companions and dogs will benefit. A close friend of mine just adopted a puppy. I have already ordered her a copy.
• Full disclosure I know one of the authors from my dog park. She lives what she writes with her own dogs. The other author is renowned in this area for his expertise. Both share what I believe to be important about dogs and our relationship to dogs. If you don't already, make sure your dog has time unleashed and out in the world.
• Helpful for me to meet the emotional, physical, and sensory needs of my GSD puppy. • Some of this I figured out over the years that I've lived with dogs. Many excellent insights that all people living with dogs need to be aware of and explore.
• One can never get enough information on dogs - mans best friend!!
• There were some fascinating facts about dogs here, but the book seemed to keep going back to the main premise of the book which is, "Let dogs be dogs as much as possible."
• After reading this book I'm realizing what our companions are giving up in order to live with us. It saddens me somewhat - toys, comfort and spoiling don't make up for their loss of freedom. But, after reading Unleashing Your Dog A Field Guide to Giving Your Canine Companion the Best Life Possible, I understand how much we can improve our pets lives by understanding the world from their point of view as much as possible.
  I'm already stepping back and not expecting so much from my pets. When I walk them, I pause for them to sniff and look - especially my reactive dog. It seems to satisfy an inner need of hers. Understanding the dog’s point of view makes it much easier for me interact with them. Rather than being frustrated by all the pauses during our walks, I now understand that sensing their environment is enriching, pleasurable and satisfying to them. They are fulfilling a need that makes their lives richer.
  
  Statements in the book are backed up by facts, studies and research, yet the book is reader friendly. And, the facts are interesting. For instance, “Dogs have 125 to 300 million olfactory receptors compared to our measly 6 million.” That’s why sniffing is so important to dogs. One sniff and they get a complete tome while you and I barely get a column of information through our noses.
  
  Clear information given in a reader-friendly manner that makes us able to make the lives of our companions better for them and easier for us. A pretty good book, I say.
